The Intermediate Backpacking Course builds on what was learned in the Beginning Backpacking Basics Course. This session includes one weeknight session plus a weekend of field instruction and a guided 2-night backpacking trip. The weeknight session will be held on Thursday evening, May 19 at our gear shop located at 37 Bank Street in New Albany, Indiana from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm, with time before and after for questions. The weekend session will begin and end at The Outpost/Outdoor Education Center near Georgetown, Indiana, starting at 6 pm on May 20 and concluding by 6 pm on Sunday May 22.

What to Bring: To the Thursday night session, bring a notebook, pen and your backpack loaded with gear you have.  At this session, we will cover gear and food needs for the weekend backpacking trip. 

Topics Covered include but are not limited to: Reviewing Pack Adjustment and Packing Techniques; Going Ultralight; Long Distance Hiking, Planning, Resupply; Long Distance Trails; Field Repairs; Hiking in Extended Period of Rain; Backpacking at Altitude; Snow and Ice Travel/Use of an Ice Ax; Dealing with Backcountry Emergencies; Backpacking with Children; Route Finding; Knots for the Outdoors.
