Pictured Rock National Lakeshore, Michigan

Join us for some incredible backpacking along a sublime stretch of the North Country Scenic Trail in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. We will cover a total of 42 miles through Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore along multi-colored cliffs and dunes above Lake Superior. As we hike through the nation’s first designated national lakeshore, we will enjoy waterfalls, miles of pristine beaches, and Grand Sable Banks, which extend for five miles and rise 300 feet above the lake. We will also hike through the 12,000-acre Beaver Basin, one of the nation’s newest wilderness areas. With few hills to climb and fall colors near prime, this is a trip suited for all experience levels. Trip begins and ends in Marquette, Michigan.

Daily Itinerary

Night before: Since we will meet at 8:30am on Day 1, you may choose to arrive in Marquette, Michigan, the night before the trip begins. If you drive on your own, you may also meet the group at the Munising Falls Interpretive Center at 10:00 am on Day 1.

Day 1: Meet in Marquette, MI at 8:30am at the Country Inn and Suites near Sawyer International Airport. After meeting with your guide(s) we will review personal gear, sort group gear and pack up. Ground transportation begins with travel to the Munising Falls Interpretive Center (our hiking end point) where a shuttle will take us to the trailhead. Today’s seven-mile hike takes us along the Grand Sable Dunes, five square miles of sand 300 feet above Grand Sable Banks.

Day 2: Today we stretch our legs a bit more and cover 11 miles. We visit Au Sable Lighthouse with its 18-mile beacon and continue along Twelvemile Beach and White Birch Forest, a picturesque stand of white birch. In the afternoon, we make camp adjacent to the Beaver Basin Wilderness.

Day 3: Today we cover 12.4 miles continuing along Twelvemile Beach. We visit Grand Portal Point and Spray Falls, which plunges about 70 feet over the Pictured Rocks cliffs directly into Lake Superior. The 1856 shipwreck "Superior" lies at the base of the falls in 20 feet of water.

Day 4: Today’s shorter 6-mile hike gives us ample opportunity for exploration, reflection and taking frequent photographs along Pictured Rocks beautiful cliffs. We visit Miner’s Castle, the most famous rock formation at Pictured Rocks.

Day 5: Our final hike covers 6.4 miles over cliffs and beaches, past Sand Point, before returning to our vehicles midafternoon. After a short stop in the visitor’s center, we travel back to Marquette for showers, a celebration dinner and overnight accommodations.

Day 6: Depart on your own or return to Sawyer International Airport for outgoing flights home.

Upon registration, a $200 deposit is required to hold your spot with final payment due 30 days prior to departure.   All trips subject to an overall minimum group size.
